Unwritten

Good morning, friends!

Happy Halloween!

I hope you had a great weekend and that things are going well for you!

I wanted to share another inspiring song with you today! This one is from 2004 and is one of my favourites! It’s a great song to belt out and really sit with the lyrics.

It's about living life to the fullest, making every day count, and really soaking up all that life has to offer. It’s also about writing your story. The blank notebook sits before you and only you can write in it. It’s your story and you best believe you’re the main character. The song is Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield and you can listen on YouTube or on Spotify.

Your life is made up of a series of choices, actions, reactions, and thoughts. It truly is what you make it. The reality of life is that only you can live your life. No one can do that for you.

The chorus of the song goes like this:

Feel the rain on your skin

No one else can feel it for you

Only you can let it in

No one else, no one else

Can speak the words on your lips

Drench yourself in words unspoken

Live your life with arms wide open

Today is where your book begins

The rest is still unwritten

This song reminds me to ground myself in each moment and stay present with myself and my surroundings. Really feel the sunshine on your face, or the rain on your skin. See the breeze as it rustles the leaves in the trees and take in the glorious colours that the world is painted with. If you don’t work to bring yourself into the present and notice these tiny joys in every day you simply miss them. You miss the little things that make life greater, bolder, brighter. You miss the small little details of your story that really make the story whole.

So, when you’re writing your story and those blank pages are before you, ask yourself if you want them to be bold, exciting, colourful, full of joy, and bursting with details. Or would you rather a safe story, with no details, imagery, emotions, art, beauty, or your strong voice to carry your very worthy thoughts?

I know I want it all. It’s a beautiful thing to live a life to the fullest. To write in all the details of each day means to notice them. To seek them out. From a writer’s perspective sometimes I write the bare bones of the scene to determine what exactly is happening and where it needs to go. Then I go back and add in the extras. The details, the emotion, the colour. I add in the small little things that make the scene more realistic and meaningful. It’s the small stuff that brings the scene to life.

When you write your story make sure you are including those small details. They are what bring it all to life. They are little joys that make each day incredible. Even when it’s a rough day or things are just not going your way, the sun will shine, the rain will cleanse, the candles will flicker, the coffee will be strong, your family, friends and pets will smile, the music will play, and life will carry on. In fact, it’s on those more challenging days where it’s imperative that we look for the little joys in the day. They will remind you that there is still joy and light even on those darker days.

So, start your day like I start a scene. Lay out your to-do list and then spend your day adding in the details. Notice the joys and brightness so that if there is a plot twist your heart and mind are grounded and light, which makes adjusting and reacting to the twist easier.

And of course, while going about your day remember to be gentle with yourself. You’re doing a great job.
